2.) Think about what kind of feeling you want people to have after using your product or service. This feeling should be present in your office. If you don't have something, you can't give it away (or sell it).

3.) Eliminate anything in your office that is not directly supporting your business processes, your clients or the feeling you are creating in the world.

This may take some time and consideration. You will want to balance inspirational vs. business related items and you want to balance open space vs. used space. An office with no open space will feel cluttered no matter how many inspiring items are in it.

Eliminate anything that was business related, but is not relevant to your current business. Do not become a museum or archive of your past success (or failure). Be diligent about what you allow into your office. It's not a dumping ground for things-I'm-not-sure-what-to-do-with. Anything that does not support your mission or your vision is not allowed to enter. Surround yourself with items that support you and do not distract you.

4.) Arranged your furniture so that you can see the door from where you sit. If you are not facing the door now, this change alone will make a powerful shift in your ability to manifest your vision in the world. If you are unable to move your desk, get a mirror and place it so you can see the door behind you.

5.) Create a space that is balanced using colors and materials that are pleasing to you. A lively color like yellow is great for an office since it offers some stimulation but is calm enough not to cause agitation. Stay away from too much grey, white and black. Blue is a calming color if you are in a high stress environment. Add lots of plants, flowers and even a water fountain if you are willing to maintain it.

6.) Enjoy this space that supports you, your mission and your vision.

7.) Repeat. As you and your business grow and change you will continue to revise your space to support your new possibilities.

The one thing that I have found when working in an office environment is that I tend to neglect myself somewhat by forgetting to keep up with my water intake, finding myself feeling lethargic and dehydrated even if there are floor standing water dispensers at each corner of the building.

Most people underestimate the importance of hydration. It is common for people not to realise that they are dehydrating, until much later on in the day when it is too late to make up for the lost fluid. Though caffeine does provide an individual with stimulants, it is in fact doing more harm to the body than they know. We as humans are absolutely dependant on water and it is vital that we maintain a good balance in water consumption. For this reason, many work environments (namely offices) have water dispensers available.

History

Drinking safe water was a key issue in the past. Early water treatments and purifications can be dated back as far as 2000 BC, whereby treatment consisted of boiling the water, or placing a hot metal in the water to filter it through from sand or charcoal. Many years later, until the invention of the microscope, water filtration changed dramatically. Scientists and researchers were able to view tiny water particles and determine whether the water was clean or not. It also helped scientists connect certain diseases related to poor quality water such as cholera, and was able to decrease the number of cholera outbreak by improving water filtration systems.

Water Coolers have been around since the 1900s, whereby large blocks of ice were used to chill the water.

Electric coolers were then created in 1938, following a variant supply of water cooling devices and many more improvements in the design. Many researchers during this period were already aware of the importance of water for a healthy lifestyle. Bottled water dispensers have been around since before the mid twentieth century, with water cooling units introduced later on.

As well as offering a cool water to drink, many units offer a heating device, providing instant heated water along with cooled water. The units are also available in many shapes and colours and can even be available with fancy electrical devices and LCD screens. Some of the ideas will not only save paper, but ink and toner costs as well.

No paper options

1. When sharing created text or spreadsheet documents with others, don't make paper copies. Instead of copying, place the document on a shared server and tell the others who need the document the file location. If no modifications to document is desired, then convert the document to PDF or password protect it for changes before revealing its location. Or instead of paper copies, the document could be sent to everyone as an email attachment If the document is going outside the company or no modifications to it are desired, then convert the document to PDF or password protect it before sending.

2. For sharing printed information that may normally be copied or faxed, scan paper documents into a computer then do one of the following. If document is to be distributed to others, either place on a shared server or email as attachments instead making copies. If document is to be filed, store it on a CD or USB drive with like files, then place that in the proper file inside the file cabinet. Pocket file folders or those with CD pockets on them make this a snap and reduce possibility of it falling out and getting lost in a drawer.

Less paper options

3. If sharing printed information within a small group and which may not be copied, saved, or distributed electronically; consider routing the document around. Place a routing slip on the document telling each person what to do with the document, how long each person may keep it, and showing the names of everyone who is to receive the document. Then put a space next to each name where readers can initial after they complete their review and then pass to next person on the list who has not initialed their name. If the document needs to return to original owner, be sure that name is last on the routing list.

4. Whenever paper copies are required, make two-side copies to reduce the amount of paper necessary. Only make one-sided copies if there is a requirement for this. If too many one-sided copies are made or after their need has passed, reuse the paper by using the back side of non-secure information as scratch paper and always place these non-secure papers in the paper recycle bin instead of the trash can after use. Be sure secured documents are disposed of according to security requirements.

Reduce paper received

5. Reduce the amount of mail received by canceling unnecessary or redundant subscriptions. For desirable subscriptions, check to see if an electronic option exists and change to that option if it does.

6. Before recycling mail advertisements, request removal from catalog and advertisement mailing lists that are not wanted. Often a toll-free phone number will be on these paper-based items that may be called for removal from their database. For mailings that are wanted in case of future business needs, ask if there is an electronic version that could be switched to or request removal from list and keep a record of their website address for researching and ordering purposes.

No matter whether your ecological journey is going green or your economical cost-reduction plans include being paperless, you should be able to find something in these six options to help get you and your people on the path. Remember, for either goal, always try to reduce waste, reuse items, or recycle whenever possible.

* Butting in. Have you noticed how some guys constantly interrupt others in team meetings? Or don't even give people a chance to finish their question, before launching into an elaborate answer. Office nasties will snatch every bit of verbal space they can find.

* Baring ones teeth. Look between the eyebrows of the office nasty - nine times out of ten, you'll find a frown lurking. Other facial expressions of choice include the grimace, the wince and but naturally, the look of exaggerated surprise!

* Ratting. This is my personal favorite.... As the big boss, you should expect to see a number of these types floating around you. The ones that strategically strike a conversation in the washroom.. "Say John, do you really think that Sarah is the right person to handle the Parsons account? I hear that her team escaped a major crisis of its own making last week ...you mean you don't know?"

* Grabbing credit. You can easily tell the office nasties from the rest - they're the ones who queue up first when the bouquets are being thrown around, and the first to slink out the door when its time for brickbats. Don't put it past them to sink their teammates to save their own skins.

* Writing nasty. In this day of easy email, the office nasties have gotten inventive. The cc monster shoots out intimidating emails to subordinates with copies marked to all the senior managers listed in his or her address book. It's easy to spot one who does this - you're sure to be on the recipient list.

* Not funny. And we close on a humorous note, except that it's not-so-funny. Office nasties love to laugh... at others. Needless to say, they laugh alone.

While you can use these hints to identify the unpleasant elements in your office, make sure you don't carry it to the other extreme. All of us are prone to unpleasant behavior of some sort, especially during times of stress. Therefore, don't jump to any conclusions too soon.

For those of you that didn't see it, here is the run down:

Lawyer Paula Brosnahan, 33, and her fiance Steve Hausman, 36, who were getting married in April 2007, sought a quote from The Great Marquee Company for their Whangaparaoa cliff-top wedding. They viewed photos on the company's website and arranged an appointment to inspect a marquee in Devonport.

But when the Mt. Albert couple decided the marquee would not be suitable and sent a polite email to the company saying they would look elsewhere, they were shocked to receive a reply from the firm saying their wedding wasn't posh enough for its tents.

The couple, who met 17 years ago, had written a polite letter saying: "Paula and I went and viewed your marquee setup at Devonport... unfortunately we did not like it... thanks for your assistance and we are sorry that it turned out this way."

Two hours later the firm's office manager, Katrina Jorgensen, replied to the couple: "Your wedding sounded cheap, nasty and tacky anyway, so we only ever considered you time wasters. Our marquees are for upper class clients which unfortunately you are not. Why don't you stay within your class levels and buy something from Payless Plastics instead."

The email response from the office manager has now been sent the world over by email forward and has been printed both online and in paper by many of the major newsgroups. It has surely been read by tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people.

The response has destroyed the company, and the owner has since fired the office manager (which happens to be his wife).

What to learn: TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY! With the invention of the internet it allows anyone to communicate anything to any number of people instantly.

What was supposed to be a "private" email has now been spread worldwide, and has destroyed a business, all because an employee got a little snappy with a customer and documented it in an email. Just imagine if this was your employee and your business.

If you say "My office staff would never do that." Reread the above example, and remember... the office manager was the owners wife!

Action-To-Take Tip: If you don't have office rules of engagement for email communications, do it now. Any employee you have on the internet has the immediate power to create a problem just like the above one.

Also, realize that email is solid documentation, if you aren't willing to have it broadcast to the world, don't put it in an email. That [forward] button is to close to the send button to risk putting anything out there that could compromise your business.

Even though there is no standard set for email and it is still considered "informal," make sure you and your staff communicate in a professional manner at all times through email, or otherwise, because you never know who is going to see, read, or hear your message.

Doctors assumed Senator Kennedy had a stroke and this would unfortunately mean he could not possible maintain his full faculties. Allowing Senator Kennedy to continue, have another serious seizure, stroke or even die on the job, is completely inhumane. It will also disrupt our nation at a crucial time, term limits aside, it's time for Senator Ted Kennedy to retire and get some rest, he has done enough. Let's help Ted Kennedy leave office as soon as possible.

'Tis the season for ... office holiday parties.

In the summer, it's office picnics or barbecues. At other times of year, there are other types of corporate get-togethers. And then there are always trade shows and conventions.

All of these events share some common pitfalls. It's a tricky balancing act, blending professionalism with socializing. And at a fancy holiday party, your co-workers suddenly don't even look much like themselves. When your boss exchanges her no-nonsense business attire for a glittery party dress and high heels, it gets confusing. Add an open bar to the mix, and we've all got stories we could tell - about other people, for sure, but probably on ourselves as well.

It is, after all, a party. You want to have fun. You're entitled to have fun. And everyone expects people to loosen up a little bit at a party, right?

Well ... yes - and no. You'll notice that it's rare for senior management to be the ones everyone talks about the next day. Not unheard of, of course, but not common, either. And even if they do go a little over the top, this is one case where modeling your behavior on theirs won't get you the recognition you want. (In fact, the adage to act and dress like the management level you aspire to isn't all that reliable. But that's another article for another time.)

On the face of it, it seems simple: behave professionally.

Of course, if it was that easy, there wouldn't be any problem, would there? Here are three ways to help keep the office party from undermining your career.

Drink Sensibly
A cautious glass of wine with dinner is one thing. But when there's an open bar, as is often the case at office parties, it can be difficult to resist. You know your capacity - and you know that "capacity" can sometimes be a sliding scale when you're having fun and being encouraged by others' behavior. So have that wine or beer with your dinner, and call it quits. Surveys by organizations like TheLadders.com show that 79% of executives report their employees' worst mistake at parties was over-indulging.

You could even make yourself a hero with your friends and offer to be the designated driver. They'll help you keep your commitment - and be forever indebted!

Be Seen - but Not Remembered
Even when you're drinking sensibly, it's still easy to get dragged into the general shenanigans by the others around you. It's an absolute fact that your boss knows who you hang out with, and your reputation can be made or marred by those people's behavior just as it is by your own. Perhaps that's not exactly fair, but it's reality nonetheless.

You don't want to be a total drag on everyone's fun, of course - including your own. Just remember that your ability to enjoy yourself within reason is a good sign that you can be relied upon in social situations with important clients. So don't do or say anything that you wouldn't do or say during regular office hours.

It's Still Work
You're staying out of the hot spots of hilarity, and you might be feeling a little sorry for yourself. But this is a work-related event, not a social engagement. It may be after normal work hours and it may be calling itself a "party," but it's a work function nonetheless.

Your goal at any office event, even a party, is to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and talents. In doing so, you're not being insincere in any way; you're simply being professional and staying focused on your career.

And be sure to get together in a real social event where you can indulge in a few drinks and a lot of laughs. It's much more fun when you're with good friends, after all!

Yes we're smack in the middle of tax time and everyone's making that mad dash to their accountants to get back every nickel they can squeeze out of the greedy government's hand and Uncle Sam has a tight grip. Those of us that have the luxury to work from home may be able to claim some of that home office space if we planned ahead.

Oops, I almost forgot my disclaimer! Let me first tell you that I am just a CheapAzz and I have no formal financial training at all. Any advice and/or comments are my cheap opinion and always seek someone much smarter than me before doing something stupid. If you don't heed this warning and do something stupid anyway, don't sue me, I've been saving my pennies and I can afford to tie you up in court for weeks. Yes, I said weeks, it's a small penny bank :)

As I was saying, if we played our cards right we can claim our home office space as a tax deduction. If you live in the United States that is. I'm afraid I'm not sure about other countries but I'd hope most would have something similar - except the Canadians, they're not allowed to work. Just joking, I'm just across the Ambassador Bridge from Canada and I'm sure we're all related in some way.

According to what I've been able to dig up the first requirement is that the space must have been used exclusively for business. There's no question that 'exclusively' means only for business. It can't be shared with other family members or family business or pleasure. If your kid uses you computer to do their homework you just lost the deduction. Besides, get a family computer and keep them off yours - it will last much longer without the viruses and spyware but that's a topic for another day.

You can deduct 100% of the expenses that were used exclusively for your home office. Things only used by the business and never used for personal use. Things like your office telephone and fax lines would be examples of direct expenses you can deduct.

You can also deduct a percentage of indirect expenses that's shared with the rest of the home such as taxes, related fees, utilities, insurance etc.. I'm not clear on what the actual percentage is. It goes something like your homes square footage divided by your neighbor's disposable income or something to that effect. That's why I always recommend you hire a professional for things this important. By professional I'm not talking about Uncle Donny that just blew forty bucks on turbo tax. Get a real professional that has some kind of document or something.

Don't get carried away when it comes to tax deductions. Be sure they're real deductions and keep the stories for the golf course. Did I mention Uncle Sam was greedy? Make sure you follow the Internal Revenue Service's home-office rules because it can come back in bite you in the.. well, you know. Be prepared to prove that the office space you use is where you make your money and not where you watch TV and play cards. Pictures and/or video of the room would be a great idea, just in case.

The rules change when you're incorporated, as I am and that's far too complicated for me to tackle. Seek professional help if necessary. Get an accountant too!

There are other limitations on home-office deductions but I just want to get you thinking if you haven't already taken advantage of the tax codes. Print this article off, ball it up, throw it in the trash and ask your tax guy or gal what you can do to get the most back next year because you have a home-based business!

Customer Review: The best chair on the market, despite difficult installtion
Yes, the Aeron Chair is expensive. It's the Mercedes Benz of chairs - and with good reason. First of all, it comes in 3 sizes to fit all sorts of body types (check the Herman Miller website for a sizing chart). Secondly, it's extremely adjustable (assuming you get the "highly adjustable" version and not the "basic"). Everything from the tilt of the seat, the arm rests, and the tension of the reclining back can be adjusted. Thirdly, the pellicle mesh fabric lets your bottom and back breath, and never do you feel too warm while sitting in it for long periods of time (which is common when you work at an office). Lastly, the quality of the chair is first-class. The main supports are made of metal while the frame is made up of a hard, quality plastic. Everything adjusts and moves without any squeeks or loose parts whatsoever. Be aware that you can buy the Aeron Chair in various forms - each having some form of options added or omitted. The PostureFit System is great for lower-back support. It's a subtle effect, but certainly beneficial. You can also buy additional casters (wheels) for deep carpet or for a smooth floor. The Aeron Chair also comes in various colors - Graphite, Titanium, and even an "Executive" version with a shiney chrome finish. The only reason I didn't rate this chair with a full 5-stars is the difficult installation of the PostureFit system (typically a $30 option). While it's not complicated, it does take some strength and dexterity to fiddle with a tight tension wire and the back of the chair itself.
Customer Review: Simply the best
The Aeron chair has become the industry standard for high quality design combined with ergonomic sensibility. They last forever, are as comfortable as any chair ever made and look great in any setting. I would beg to disagree with the other reviewer who whines about price. The chair costs a couple hundred more than cheaper alternatives, but can you really place a dollar value on not having your spine collapse at 40? This is the BMW of chairs, so one pays a premium for the superlative quality and engineering of the product. The Aeron is an excellent investment piece whose long term value is unquestionable. For anyone who sits for long periods and has ever had back, neck, shoulder, or coccyx pain, this chair is a must.

According to Real Capital Analytics' recently released report on global property market transactions, the South Florida region ranks 15th globally for commercial real estate deals.
